WHITEVILLE – East Bladen swept Whiteville 2-0 Monday in non-conference junior varsity volleyball action by set scores of 25-23 and 25-18.
A pair of service points from sophomore Mollie Tolar and 1 each from sophomores Mary Frances Sutton and Martha Simmons edged the Lady Eagles ahead 13-9 in the opening set. Whiteville closed to within 19-18 before Simmons captured 2 more service points for a 22-18 lead. Molly Evans served out the set at 25-23.
Whiteville built an early 4-1 lead in the 2nd set before Tolar racked up a trio of service points, and Sutton followed with a 6-point service run that vaulted East Bladen in front 14-9. A pair of Evans service points kept the margin at 19-14 and Tolar grew the lead to 23-15 with a trio of service points.
Sutton sparked the East Bladen attack with 7 service points, 4 attacks, a kill and 5 digs. Toler fired in 8 service points and 2 attacks. Evans hammered in 5 service points, an ace and had 3 assists and a dig.
Bridget Taylor contributed 5 digs to the defensive effort. Simmons knocked in 3 service points. Sophomore Iveonna “NeNe” Ward chipped in with 2 attacks and 3 digs, and Zoe Smith slammed in 2 blocks and a service point.
Coach Jessica Eason’s Lady Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season and will travel to East Columbus Tuesday for a 4:30 match.
